NIMML Director Gives an Invited Talk at the Gordon Research Conference
On January 9th, 2013, Professor Bassaganya-Riera, the Director of the Center for Modeling Immunity to Enteric Pathogens and the Nutritional Immunology and Molecular Medicine Laboratory (NIMML) gave an invited presentation at the Gordon Research Conference on Carotenoids (http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2013&program=carot).
The Gordon Research Conference on Carotenoids has been held triennially since 1992. The 2013 8th Gordon Research Conference on Carotenoids upheld the tradition of bringing together transdisciplinary research investigators at the forefront of carotenoid science. The conference showcased exciting developments and updates with presentations on breeding for human health; metabolic engineering of provitamin A carotenoids; biosynthesis and regulation; apocarotenoid biogenesis and signaling; carotenoid transport and metabolism; biological actions of carotenoids and their metabolites; carotenoids and chronic disease prevention; and apocarotenoids in vision.
Dr. Bassaganya-Riera discussed the anti-inflammatory and immune modulatory mechanisms of abscisic acid (ABA), a plant hormone produced through the carotenoid pathwa. (http://www.nimml.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/ABAGRC.pdf). Specifically, he discussed how ABA modulates insulin resistance and adipose tissue inflammation, colitis and influenza-driven pulmonary inflammation in mouse models, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying these immune modulatory actions.
